On behalf of Rhino HySafe and as part of a Welsh Government delegation, Stuart Moss, Sales Manager of Rhino Doors, attended the World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition 2025 in Rotterdam last month. The exhibition is the world’s largest dedicated hydrogen event, where innovation and the drive towards net zero took centre stage.
Rotterdam played host to an impressive showcase of the hydrogen industry’s rapid growth, with over 15,000 global industry experts in attendance to exchange key insights, build relationships and kickstart the next wave of hydrogen project developments. The exhibition is growing every year, and the scale of participation reflects the urgent need for clean energy solutions as governments worldwide implement comprehensive hydrogen strategies.
The hydrogen sector is experiencing rapid development across the entire value chain, from generation and storage to distribution. Large-scale ammonia applications are opening up new possibilities while production techniques are evolving to meet the growing demand.
The “off-takers” – hydrogen end users – are the key to unlocking the industry’s potential. Fertiliser production, fuel cells for heavy goods vehicles, and emerging applications in trains and aircraft represent massive market opportunities. These fuel cells, which emit only water and heat, offer a clean alternative to traditional combustion engines for sectors that are notoriously difficult to decarbonise.
Overcoming the cost challenge
The cost of green hydrogen remains high, which is constraining demand from potential off-takers. Discussion at the summit was around the projected decrease in costs as production scales up and technologies mature. This is the classic adoption curve that has been observed with other renewable technologies, such as solar panels and wind turbines.
Energy storage
One of hydrogen’s most promising applications is energy storage. As renewable energy sources like onshore and offshore wind, solar installations, and tidal power become more prevalent, hydrogen offers a solution for storing excess power when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun isn’t shining. This capability positions hydrogen as a crucial component in creating a reliable, fully renewable energy system.
Rhino’s strategic position
The summit reinforced our confidence in hydrogen’s future and Rhino’s role within it. As the hydrogen industry ramps up to meet demand, the need for high-integrity safety products becomes paramount.
Rhino’s expertise in safety solutions positions us to support hydrogen projects as they scale up from demonstration to commercial deployment. Our products ensure that as the industry grows, it grows safely.
Being part of the Welsh government delegation highlighted Wales’s commitment to becoming a leader in the hydrogen economy.
Looking to the future
The World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition 2025 showcased an industry on the brink of transformation. Technology is maturing, costs are decreasing, and demand is increasing. For companies like Rhino, this presents an exciting opportunity to be part of the solution.
The hydrogen economy is no longer a question of “if” but “when.” Based on what we saw in Rotterdam, that “when” is approaching faster than many anticipated. Rhino is ready to power that future safely and reliably.
