Following the successful manufacture and supply of VERTEX-1 Explosion Relief Panels for a significant project in the UK, Rhino HySafe has now completed the manufacture of a specialised blast door for the same application. This blast door represents an essential component in the overall safety for the modified ISO container housing the hydrogen compressor.

Dual Safety Components Working Together
The blast door is a critical complement to the VERTEX-1 Explosion Relief Panel, creating a comprehensive safety system for the container. The design ensures that in the unlikely event of a hydrogen leak and subsequent explosion, the container and blast door maintain their structural integrity while safely directing the blast pressure through the Explosion Relief Panel.
This engineering approach prioritises personnel safety and equipment protection, addressing the unique challenges associated with hydrogen compression applications.
Innovative Design for Challenging Requirements
This project presented several significant engineering challenges that required innovative solutions:
- Off-Seating Load Design: Most blast doors are designed for on-seating loads, where blast pressure pushes the door leaf onto the frame, providing natural resistance. However, space constraints within the ISO container necessitated an outward-opening door, creating an off-seating load scenario where pressure pushes against the hinges and latching mechanisms—a substantially more demanding condition.
- Category 1 Performance Rating – The door carries a 0.4barg blast pressure rating with Category 1 classification for post-blast operability. This classification represents the most stringent performance standard, requiring the door to remain fully operational with no significant damage after exposure to a blast event. This level of performance is particularly valuable in hydrogen applications, where maintaining access to equipment following a safety incident can be crucial for rapid response and recovery operations.
Rhino HySafe Manufacturing Expertise
Rhino HySafe selected a Rhino-HBL blast door design from our sister company, Rhino Doors, to meet these exacting requirements. The Rhino HySafe team manufactured the door at the Group’s Northwest facility near Preston, Lancashire.
